SMM was founded in the early 1970’s at Terry’s house.
It later moved to the hockey club and then to the Tennis Club.
The club was unique for its time, running at that time was for men in athletic clubs, this club allowed women. In was for veterans only, men over 40 and women over 35. Upon joining you were asked to run a marathon in your first year, preferably under 3 hours.
Training was twice a week, Wednesday evening about 8 miles and Sunday 17+ miles. The distinctive red track suit was born, with the names of all marathons run sewn on the sleeves.
It was Terry who coined the motto Sapientia Atque Levitas. Wisdom or cunning, light of foot or low body weight.
We had many weekends away and parties at Terry and Monica’s house, we bought red cars and red underwear. The club was recognised both in the UK and abroad
