STONE MASTER MARATHONERS SPRING TREBLE
Our Spring Treble series of trail races has become a firm favorite with runners of all abilities and is dedicated to the memory of our late member, David Upton, who instigated the series and was Race Director for many years. First held a couple of decades ago, the races are run over three consecutive Thursday evenings in April with the advantage of the lighter nights of the Spring Equinox getting us off the winter roads into Staffordshire’s beautiful countryside. Each event is based on a tough, off road, hilly course of around four to five miles and gives runners an early indication of their current form and fitness for the forthcoming season.
2026 Venues
‘Kibblestone Klamber’ , at Kibblestone Scout Camp (reinstated to the series in 2019), and is multiple laps of the steep ascents and descents, loved and hated in equal measures for the experience which is unique to our Club. Kibblestone International Scout Camp, Kibblestone Road, Stone ST15 8UJ.
‘Marquis Mayhem’ at Cannock Chase, A race around the lovely Cannock Chase with a couple of ‘challenging’ hills to keep everybody entertained. Starts near to Marquis Visitor Centre, Cannock Chase WS12 4PW.
‘Common Plot Canter’ at Stone Common Plot, a new venue for 2026, it’s an undulating two lap course over meadows and through the trees, with a dash of gravel and tarmac thrown in to mix it up a little. After the race there will usually be the Series Prize giving at Lymestone Brewery (adjacent to the Start/Finish) and the chance to share a well earned drink with fellow athletes. Join us in the scenic Staffordshire village of Standon for the best run of the Autumn: an undulating 10 mile road race through beautiful rolling countryside.
**As we sold out last year, we recommend signing up early**.
First held in 2003 and named the “Flying Fox” in honour of our club logo, this fun but challenging event is a popular fixture on the North Staffs Road Runners Association programme. Run on picturesque, quiet lanes, the course winds from Standon through the lovely villages of Chapel Chorlton and Maer, with a small hill or two along the way!
The race finishes at All Saints School in Standon (ST21 6RN) where there are ample refreshments to suit the weather, which at that time of the year can be, ahem, ‘variable’. Plenty of car parking is available at the nearby Standon Mill by kind courtesy of their owners and there are also limited spots on the lanes nearby.
Course records are held by Lee Gratton (50:15 in 2025) and Emma Taylor (1:00:04 in 2024). However, the race is to be enjoyed by most of us ‘mere mortals’ at whatever speed we want!
Cost – £23 affiliate,£25 unaffiliated.
We hope you enjoy the event and achieve your personal goals.
Thank you to all our volunteers and sponsors.
